Very nice town (even it is a city, but in touristical part, it's a cosy little town with sloped cobblestone streets), VERY NICE people (Bulgarians are our brothers, indeed, I always felt that, as a Romanian).
Well organised, photogenic, good food, nice views and relaxing!

I used to live in Veliko Tarnovo (VT) so I know it pretty well. Being they old capital of Bulgaria, it is steeped in history and is great place for tourists with an interest in Bulgarian history to come and explore.
The Yantra River meanders in a steep valley, through Veliko Tarnovo.
There are a plethora of hotels to stay at and many apartments to rent, along with numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.
The main street winds its way along the hillside and the total length is walkable in about 40 minutes. There are shops of all types and further out of the city, there are super stores - supermarkets, DIY stores and furniture stores.
Taxis are cheap, metered and widely available and can also take you to nearby villages and back.
The city is served a network of buses.
Veliko Tarnovo has a railway station, that connects with Gorna Oryavitsa (a main railway hub) the line runs between Ruse and Stara Zagora. There's also a once daily international train between Bucharest and Istanbul, stopping at Gorna Oryavitsa and Veliko Tarnovo.
There are museums, galleries, a beautiful park, even a visiting circus.
Tsaravets Fortress lies at one end of the city, at the top of a hill.
For those with disabilities, walking is often up and down steps and fairly steep hills and wheelchair access to many places is limited, although this is improving, albeit slowly.
Climate in Veliko Tarnovo is very cold in the winter months of January and February, as low as minus 15°C and it can snow heavily. Summer months are hot.

The free walking tour of the city is excellent.
The free walking tour of the city is excellent. We paid a premium price (50 euro) for a guide around the fortress, but are almost certain we could have found a competent guide for less. The fortress has a rich history, but know that what you see has been rebuilt based on what it might have looked like--there was no written record to know for sure.

My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed.
My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed. The city has become a tourist trap. No decent place to eat that's not overpriced and with a completely bored and "couldn't be bothered" attitude of the wait staff.
Tsarvets is an overpriced ruin - half of it is a construction site with junk and pipes rolling around waiting to trip people up. I can't believe one of the nation's greatest treasures is so run down. Compared to other smaller museums in Bulgaria, they have done ZERO effort to make it nice, tell a story, have exhibits that transport you into the magical time of the Bulgarian kingdoms. It's like walking around a junkyard parking lot. Very disappointing.
Everyone in the city is clearly just using their hotels and attractions as a cash cow. Doing the bare minimum, if at all. A waiter at one of the restaurants had the gall to ask my partner for a tip when he paid with a credit card. I guess the waiter assumed he was American (he's not) and used to tipping 20%. We didn't tip because the service is atrocious and the servers don't expect Bulgarians to tip. Very off putting.

A wonderful mix of old and new in this historical center of beautiful Bulgaria. Lively and also cool. And bulgarians are decent people. Great restaurants and atmosphere - top recommendation is Restaurant Shtastliveca in the center of the town. Great food and great service by waiters who even know how to serve a good wine. Excellent! Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire 1185-1396. Approx 220 km from Sofia - same distance to Varna and the Bulgarian Rivieria and wonderful Varna at the Black Sea. Beautiful trip by car in a stunning nature.
I liked how the outside looked, the outdoor dining area, the balconies, and the breakfast. Plus, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the ac worked well, much better than the air conditioning I experienced at other hotels in Bulgaria. Additionally, there were cats near the outdoor dining area that were very cute! They also let us park the car there for extra time the next day so we could sightsee without worrying about the car.
The hotel is very close to the center and there are several places to eat and drink within 200 meters of it. The parking is on the street in front of the hotel. Rooms are clean and medium-large sized. There is a breakfast from 8 to 10 (I think) in the sky-bar (we missed it as we left very early in the morning). At the ground floor there is also a restaurant. Reception in 24/7. Overall, a good place to stay in Veliko Turnovo.
This is our family's must-visit place when we travel in this part of Bulgaria. Cozy and spacious apartments, spotlessly clean, with an amazing large terrace offering an incredible view of Tsarevets Fortress, underground parking. The location is quiet and easily accessible by car, yet only 5 mins away from the city center, Tsarevets and all the museums and restaurants. We will keep on returning here!
The apartments are close to the fortress and also at walking distance to city center. We stayed in a studio and everything was perfect. The room was very clean and equiped with everything to prepare your own breakfast. The bed was confortable. I also liked that I could park my car inside the property underground parking.
Overall, considering what we paid, it exceeded our expectations.
Amazing front-desk staff, free coffee/tea at reception, excellent location. The building looks nice from the outside, so are the reception area and the restaurant. Breakfast had to be ordered from the previous evening and options were quite limited (e.g. no cereal or fresh fruits) - which is not a plus - but overall the food quality was good compared to other hotels in Bulgaria.
This apartment is just perfection! Spacious, comfortable, with all of the amenities that you can think of. The location is outstanding - to sleep just meters away from the Bulgarian medieval fortress Tsarevets was a very special experience.
The host is lovely and has created a beautiful space with lots of love. I highly recommend the guest house Velikite!
The hotel is a magnificent old house in Bulgarian Revival style like the rest of Gurko Street. It overlooks the river bend and surrounding hills and sits below the old town. The staff are friendly and helpful. The room was large, comfortable and clean. Breakfast is tasty and generous.
The perfect stay in Veliko Türnovo. The views to the fortres from our room were spectacular.. The bed was very confortable. The room super clean. The staff very helpful. The terrace on the top of the hotel have the best views to enjoy "the sound of the lights" show.
A great place for the price - Loved the stay. Friendly staff. Great restaurant/pub downstairs serving delicious breakfast, great lunch/dinner options, great beer and drinks. Loved Veliko Turnovo mostly because of the very pleasant hotel. Highly recommend! ❤️🏍️🍻
The hotel made a reservation for me when my booking.com reservation failed. We had a massive snow storm and I needed to find a place to stay while electricity was restored to my home. The staff were very helpful and welcoming!
As advertised, the view from the balcony is wonderful. The host is very friendly and helpful. The studio is charming. The location is great to explore the old town. It is very small, but the bathroom is spacious for the size.
We had a big room with beds for four persons. And the airco was a welcome addition for the hot weather at the time we were in Veliko Turnovo.
The owner of the property gave us good tips about sightseeing and good restaurants.
If you're going to explore the Old Town of Veliko Tarnovo, it's a perfect place to stay. The restaurant downstairs also serves nice food and has a traditional Bulgarian feel to it. The pillows were very comfortable.
The room was very clean, just like the photos show, the bed was comfortable, the location is just in the city center, very close to everything. I would return to this hotel during my next visit to Veliko Turnovo.
Amazing :) staff were really attentive, prepared a special surprise for us, facilities were great too! Can’t believe there is a hidden gem like this in Bulgaria, we will definitely visit again.
