Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.

When in Albania, Gjirokaster should definitely be on your list. The views from the castle are amazing and a visit to the Bazaar for those Instagram pictures is also a must.
But what we enjoyed the most was the travel between Berat and Gjirokaster. Make sure to stop at Tepelene to fill your water bottles with some fresh water and try some deliciously baked fresh trout. Find a small road next to the river, drive in and get yourself wet in the pristine clear water.

Amazing views from the historic castile
Incredible architecture - like nothing seen before
Whilst the bazaar is somewhat touristy - there are lots of lovely restaurants and bars, and the odd authentic shop to keep everyone happy.
Don't dismiss going down into the new town too
Everything!
It's a beautiful building situated in the heart of the historic old town.
Tastefully renovated with modern equipments and classic traditional touches.
The hosts are very welcoming, friendly and willing to help with everything.
Spacious, cosy, warm room with a comfortable bed and spotlessly clean beddings and bathroom.
Breakfast is delicious, plenty and everything fresh.
Will definitely be back and I recommend this place to everyone who wants to get e real taste of Gjirokaster.
This is a great little apartment for one or a two night stay. Apartment was really clean, bed was comfortable, breakfast was all homemade and plentiful. Walking distance to see the sights of Gjirokaster and where the buses pick up and drop off. Yes you do have to walk up the big hill to the Old Town and Castle but it really is not that bad. Owners were lovely and friendly, even if they didn't speak little or no English. Highly recommend this apartment.
Definitely recommend!! Amazing location, super nice rooms and courtyard, very clean. Erisa and her husband run this 3-room hotel with a lot of love, they made us feel at home and gave us great recommendations for Gjirokastër and surroundings. The breakfast was really good with everything you could ask for: juice, coffee, eggs, cheese, jams, fruit, bread and local specialties.
When back in Gjirokastër, we'll definitely stay here again!
Stayed at the Superior Double room which was a fantastic authentic Ottoman style room. Irvin at the reception was exceptional and gave us a great tour of the hotel, with explanation of the city's main sites visible from the balcony on top of the hotel, as well as serving us a lovely tea which was soothing after my drive coming from Berat (passed through a rainy storm!). Hotel Kalemi definetly won on the list of nicest hotels I ever went to.
The best hotel in Gjirokaster! The location is perfect, it’s so close to everything in the old town. The rooms are clean with comfortable beds and you’ll get the best night sleep! But what really made the stay at Hotel Gjirokaster was the wonderful was the staff, they are the most welcoming people who make you feel like you are right at home. And the breakfast is plentiful and delicious, with great coffee. I recommend staying here 100%
Great mattress and really quiet at night so we slept well - probably all the hills in Gjirokaster help too!
Albin is a friendly and funny guy to talk to. It’s great to chat with a local and find out more about life in Albania.
The breakfast is awesome! The best byrek we have had - big thank you to Albin’s friend’s mom for that!
Gjirokaster is a lovely place to spend a few days and this a fantastic guesthouse…..
The location is superb. The hotel is right in the center of Gjirokaster at the Bazaar with a terrace offering a wonderful view over the city
The owning family is friendly, welcoming and helpful. They were always there for us and offered a great service.
The breakfast was tasty and plentiful, offering a range of different local foods.
The rooms were clean, with a good A/C and came with some complementary water.
Everything. Gorgeous room- worth splashing out for a balcony. The hotel staff apologised that the balcony was 'small' but it was amazing and roomy enough for two persons with a magnificent view of the mountains AND Gjirokaster castle. Room itself felt like a posh Ottoman house. Breakfast was 5-star, so much food and all so good!! Staff very attentive and helpful.
My stay at SS KEKEZI introduced me to the legendary hospitality of Albania. Not only did the owner's wonderful mother personally bring me snacks and treats to make me feel welcome, but the hotel is also ideally located, essentially minutes away from some of Gjirokaster's best restaurants and key tourist attractions. No complaints... and highly recommended!
Incredibly beautiful location, the hotel is literally under Castle of Gjirokastër, with a pool, bar and an amazing view overall, we got an wonderful room for only 60€ and we were treated amazingly by the hotel owner (which helped us parking) and by the young guy at the reception. Very recommended! A must go hotel in Gjirokastër!
The host Maria was very kind and attentive. She welcomed us in front of the property and showed us our room.
The property is in the Old city and very close to the Bazaar and all the restaurants, cafeteria and historic sites in Gjirokaster.
We've had an amazing time and I truly recommend Maria and her lovely house.
Hotel Pashai is exceptional. So beautifully presented, such friendly, attentive staff. On top of all that, it is in a wonderful location. This is a really memorable trip for me and my husband! will choose this property for my next trip to Gjirokaster for sure!Thank you for such a wonderful stay.
Excellent place, amazing location. The hotel has a mix of decorations of traditional and modern. I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Gjirokaster. The owner and the staff were amazing, very helpful, and welcoming. The food was delicious and fresh. So, defently 10 out of 10
Super place to stay in Gjirokäster ! We found easily a place to park outside and then the hotel is perfectly situated in the center of the city. Room was clean and calm, breakfast on the terrace was excellent ! Thanks a lot to Loula who was so kind with us :)
Exceptional view of Gjirokaster from the hotel room veranda. Swimming pools with the same view. Very good food both for breakfast and dinner. The air conditioning in the room had been switched on before our arrival so the room was nicd and cool.
The hotel is very modern in the old city of Gjirokastër. The breakfast was very tasty. Also the location was perfect for a stroll through the tourist sights. The rooms were very clean and the beds comfortable.
The hotel is located in a charming old building. The service was outstanding and everyone was really trying to make our stay memorable. We truly enjoyed it. Breakfast was amazing, I highly recommend it.
Everything, including the breakfast was superb. What a lovely new little hotel . Great to see Albania investing in its hot spots , of which Gjirokaster is certainly one .
